Whatever Your Age, It’s Never Game Over!

Are you ever too old to start again?

It’s the question that plagues many people who wish to turn over a new leaf and try something completely new. Not everybody makes an immediate success of their lives, especially in their 20s and 30s. From stepping down the wrong career path to spending time in the wrong relationships, there are many people out there who wish they could simply wipe the slate clean and start afresh, with a new career and a new outlook on life.

The good news is it’s entirely possible to start life from scratch. You’ll need serious motivation, and a lot of patience, but it’s completely possible. If you’re thinking of embarking on a new journey, whatever your age, here are a few tips to help you out…

Time to embrace change

If you’re trying to start anew, it’s important to embrace whatever change comes your way. Change can be very scary – especially if you’ve spent decades living a comfortable and secure life, with home comforts and your own family unit. But change is good – it helps us to evolve and grow, and makes us feel alive. Start by embracing the little changes (a new hobby or a side business) and work your way to up to embracing serious change (a brand new career path or even life in another country). A change has got to come!

Use what you’ve learned about yourself

Many people say that they barely knew who they were in their teens and 20s. They didn’t know their strengths or their true passions – many even say they were simply acting out the career paths that they thought were ‘right’ for them. But with age comes experience, and it’s likely that you’ve learned a lot about yourself – your likes, dislikes, abilities and skills. When starting afresh, it’s important to use what you’ve learned about yourself to be the best version of yourself.

You can reinvent yourself

For many people, starting again means moving to a new city or country, and this offers an incredibly exciting opportunity: you’ll have the chance to reinvent yourself. You can shrug off the reputation you had back home, the nicknames accumulated over the years, the bad habits and the destructive relationships. You can truly become the person you’ve always wanted to be without the baggage linking you with your past.

Create the life you truly want

The surefire way to figure out what kind of life you truly want is to first live the life you don’t want. Many people thought they wanted a life of security and safety, with the traditional family unit and comfortable career. But after ten or twenty years of this, perhaps you’ve realised that what you really want is adventure – you want to explore, meet new people, innovate, create and make your mark on the world. Starting afresh gives you the chance to create the life you truly want to live, rather than the one you thought you wanted all those years ago.
